Orlando Roman is a PhD candidate in Development Economics at the Geneva Graduate Institute. His research is at the intersection of Development Economics, Political Economy, and Economic History. He is interested in how historical institutions and cultural norms influence contemporary development outcomes. His PhD dissertation investigates the long-term effects of colonial-era private concession companies on development outcomes in Mozambique, and the impact of gendered languages on gender norms in India. 

He has research experience with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, the World Bank, and the Competitiveness Research Network, focusing on poverty and inequality of opportunity in Asia and the Pacific, Sub-Saharan Africa, and firm dynamics in Europe. He holds an MSc in Economics from the University of Amsterdam and a BSc in Economics from the Autonomous University of Madrid

Orlando is originally from Venezuela. Prior to 2023, he published under his full name, Orlando Zambrano Roman.
